Galactosemia Master Food List

The foods and ingredients listed below are considered UNACCEPTABLE in the diet for children with galactosemia. They all contain either lactose or galactose, the 2 compounds which need to be eliminated in the diet for galactosemia. When you are shopping for foods which are processed in any way, be sure to check that none of those ingredients are listed on the label:
butter
buttermilk
buttermilk solids
calcium caseinate
casein
***cheese, all types
cream
dry milk
dry milk protein

(garbonzo beans, kindey beans, lima beans, lentils, split peas)
# 2. hydrolyzed protein
ice cream

LACTALBUMIN (milk albuminate)
LACTOSE
LACTOGLOBULIN

nonfat dry milk
non fat dry milk solids

#2. Hydrolyzed protein is unacceptable if it is made from casein and whey.

#3. A few diet margarine's do not contain any milk products and are acceptable. If margarine is listed as an ingredient in any processed food, check with the company to make sure it doesn't contain milk products.

#4. Organ meats are often listed as "meat-by-products" on labels.

#5. sherbet contains non-fat dry milk, however, many brands of sorbet do not and are acceptable.
